Why 4-Week SAT & ACT Prep Courses Don’t Work

SAT Prep, ACT Prep, High School, College Admissions

The majority of SAT & ACT prep courses are four weeks long. However, I do not believe this is enough time for most students to raise their test scores. Most students at 2400 Expert do not see their biggest score improvements until they take practice exams in weeks 5 and 6 of the course.

Weeks 5 and 6 are when students are finally comfortable with the new material they just learned. We dedicate the last two weeks of our SAT & ACT prep course to reviewing concepts taught earlier in the course. No other course takes the time to review previous material. While this may sound repetitive, I believe repetition is the father of learning. Our students don’t just learn material once and forget it. They master the material.

Score improvements are directly related to the amount of time a student dedicates to preparing for the SAT. Once again, most SAT & ACT prep courses offer only 18 hours of classroom time with the instructor. How can a student improve their score significantly if they are spending so little time preparing for the test?

I believe 100 hours of preparation is necessary to improve your test score significantly. In order to achieve this in our SAT & ACT prep courses, our students attend 36 hours of class with an expert instructor, complete 24 hours of testing with a professional proctor, and do 40 hours of assigned homework to practice what they’ve learned.

We achieve all of this in 6 weeks. Although it’s a significant commitment, your SAT or ACT score deserves the time investment. One of our instructors at 2400 Expert, Ryan Fitzgibbons, always says the following: “You spend about 4,000 hours in high school working towards a GPA. And you spend 4 hours one Saturday morning taking the SAT/ACT. And colleges view your GPA and test score about the same.”  So take some time to balance the scales.
