Why The University of Austin’s New “Merit-First” Admissions Policy Matters — And What It Signals For The Future

As someone who scored a perfect SAT score, built a national test prep company, and has helped over 100,000 students improve their standardized test scores, I’ve spent my career advocating for merit-based opportunity.
So when I saw the University of Austin (UATX) unveil its new Merit-First Admissions Policy, I couldn’t help but pay attention.
In an age where college admissions have become increasingly subjective, UATX is doing something few others are brave enough to do: put objective academic achievement back at the center of the conversation.
And I believe this could mark a turning point.
🧪 The UATX “Merit-First” Model: A Radical Return to Academic Rigor
UATX’s admissions process is refreshingly clear and bold:
- Automatic Admission for applicants who score:
- 1460+ on the SAT
- 33+ on the ACT
- 105+ on the Classic Learning Test (CLT)
- $100,000+ in Scholarships for high performers (SAT 1500+, ACT 34+, CLT 108+)
- A streamlined process for others, requiring:
- Test scores
- AP/IB results
- Three one-sentence, verifiable achievements
No personal essays. No legacy admissions. No race-based criteria. No application fees. Just academic merit and tangible accomplishments.
As someone who has seen firsthand how test prep can transform students’ trajectories, I find this approach refreshing — and necessary.
🎯 What This Means for Students — And The Meritocracy Debate
The broader message here is clear: academic excellence should be recognized and rewarded.
Too often, high-performing students are told that test scores don’t matter, or that their hard work is less important than a compelling narrative. I’ve never bought into that — and neither, apparently, has UATX.
While critics will argue that test scores can reflect socioeconomic inequities (a real concern), I also know that with the right resources and mindset, students from any background can dramatically improve. I’ve seen it happen thousands of times.
This is why I founded Prep Expert® — to make that transformation accessible.
🔥 A Cultural Shift In Real Time
UATX isn’t just launching a new admissions policy. It’s challenging an entire ideology that has dominated higher education for the past two decades.
Whether this “merit-first” movement spreads will depend on how parents, students, and institutions respond. But one thing is certain:
👉 This is a wake-up call for the entire college admissions ecosystem.
