One October Morning: How a PSAT Score Turns into Six Figures of Scholarship Money

At the University of Oklahoma, a resident National Merit Finalist entering in autumn 2026 is offered a package the university publishes at $146,850. The non-resident package is published at $153,450. Both are built on a tuition waiver covering 100 percent of tuition for up to five years, with further awards stacked on top.

The qualifying exam for that money is the PSAT/NMSQT, taken on a single Wednesday morning in October of junior year.

Most students walk into that room having been told it is a rehearsal.

More than 1.3 million students entered the 2027 National Merit competition through the 2025 PSAT/NMSQT, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. About 50,000 receive recognition. Around 6,700 awards will be offered.

THE TIERS AND WHAT EACH IS WORTH

The 50,000 who are recognized split into groups with very different financial consequences.

Commended Students*

Around 34,000 students a year receive Letters of Commendation. They are high scorers who did not reach the Semifinalist cutoff in their state.

Commended students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships. Some are candidates for special scholarships offered by corporate sponsors, and a number of colleges attach smaller merit awards to the designation.

A student a question or two short of their state’s cutoff lands here, which is the sharpest financial cliff in the programme.

*A real credential that does not continue in the main competition.

Semifinalists*

Just over 16,000 students a year qualify, designated on a state allocation basis as the highest scorers in each state.

This is the gateway. Semifinalist standing is what makes a student eligible to compete for National Merit awards and what triggers most college-specific automatic scholarships.

The required Selection Index varies by state and by year. In recent cycles the lowest state cutoffs have sat in the low 210s and the highest at 223.

*Your state’s cutoff is the only one that matters. The national picture is irrelevant to your student.

Finalists*

More than 15,000 of the 16,000 Semifinalists are expected to reach Finalist standing, which requires confirming the PSAT performance with an SAT score, an outstanding academic record, a school official’s endorsement, and an application covering courses, grades, activities and an essay.

NMSC does not announce Finalists publicly, because Semifinalists are already honoured and nearly all of them advance.

A Semifinalist who does not complete the application receives nothing, having already cleared the hard part.

*The application converts the honour into money. It is also the most commonly skipped step.

National Merit Scholars*

About 6,700 awards of three types will be offered in the 2027 competition.

Some 2,500 are single-payment National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, for which every Finalist is considered. About 700 are corporate-sponsored awards, limited to Finalists meeting a particular company’s criteria. Some 3,500 are college-sponsored awards, available only to Finalists who will attend the sponsoring institution.

Around 260 corporate organisations, universities and individual donors underwrite the awards alongside NMSC’s own funds.

*The college-sponsored route is both the largest category and the one most dependent on where a student enrols.

WHAT FIVE UNIVERSTIES ACTUALLY PAY

The institutions usually named together in these discussions are not offering comparable deals. Verified figures for autumn 2026 entry:

• University of Oklahoma. $146,850 for residents, $153,450 for non-residents. A full tuition waiver usable for five years, plus a Rising Scholars award and further components. Apply by 15 December and name OU as first choice with NMSC by 30 April, or the package is forfeited.
• University of Alabama. Tuition for up to five years or ten semesters, covering undergraduate plus a year of graduate or law study, four years of on-campus housing at the regular room rate, an annual supplemental scholarship, a one-time $2,000 research or international study allowance and a book scholarship. UA must be named as college of choice before the NMSC deadline.
• Mississippi State University. $48,000 across four years at $12,000 a year, plus a housing award of approximately $33,824 across four years. Non-residents may also receive a scholarship covering the non-resident portion of tuition.
• Oklahoma State University. An in-state package OSU has published at roughly $72,100 in total, combining a state academic award, a tuition scholarship, a National Merit cash scholarship and college-level awards. Out-of-state Finalists are guaranteed up to $7,200 a year in cash plus a tuition scholarship.
• Texas A&M University. $10,750 a year, around $43,000 across four years, for Finalists naming the university first with NMSC.

That range, from roughly $43,000 to more than $150,000, is the point. A Finalist’s award depends far more on where they enrol than on how high they scored.

Award structures change annually and several institutions have restructured in recent years. Verify current figures on the institution’s own financial aid page before any of it enters a family’s planning.

THE MECHANICS FAMILIES MISS

The college award goes to whichever institution a student designates as their first-choice National Merit school with NMSC. Only one school can hold that designation at a time, though it can be updated.

A student who designates School A and enrols at School B receives nothing from either.

That makes the designation a decision to coordinate with the application process rather than an administrative afterthought. Families who plan well build their college list with these awards in view, sometimes ranking an automatic-award public university above a costlier private option.

Deadlines are real and unforgiving. Oklahoma requires an application by 15 December and the designation by 30 April. Missing either forfeits the entire package.

WHAT PREPARED STUDENTS REPORT

The score movements that carry a student across a state cutoff are frequently produced in weeks rather than years.

Alexander Pawelek scored 1140 before a four-week course and 1410 afterward. “My score increased by more than 200 points as I earned a 1410 on my latest test, reaching National Merit level,” he wrote.

Vaidik Suthar reported a 220-point PSAT gain across four weeks. “After taking the course I noticed many of the problems I had struggled with before had simple solutions,” he wrote.

David Kim, who sat the test as a sophomore, described his confidence rising alongside a 200-point improvement.

Rachel George, taking a course with instructor Ethan Moy, said she was getting steadily more questions right and expected to be far better prepared for the real test.

Another student working with instructor Kevin Parrish described a shift in expectation rather than technique. “Before, I never really thought I could get a really high score,” the student wrote.

These are the exact movements that separate a PSAT taken casually from one that qualifies for money, and they happened over weeks.

SEVEN STEPS

Find your state’s Selection Index cutoff. NMSC publishes these, though the figure for a given cohort typically lands about a year after the test. Look at three to five years of history for your state to set a realistic target.

Measure the gap. Use the spring PSAT 10 from sophomore year as the baseline. The distance between that and your state’s likely cutoff tells you how much preparation is actually required.

Prepare the summer before junior year. No competing school demands, the test about three months out, and a six to eight week structured programme. This window consistently produces the largest jumps of the whole timeline.

Treat October as the real event. Sleep, food, materials, strategies. For National Merit purposes there is no retake and no second administration.

Complete the Finalist application. Semifinalist notifications arrive in September of senior year. More than 15,000 of the 16,000 Semifinalists advance, so the application is close to a formality in outcome and absolute in consequence. Skipping it forfeits everything.

Research automatic-award colleges and put some on the list. Even if the dream school offers nothing, including one or two automatic-award institutions changes what the family’s options look like in April.

Designate strategically. Verify current award amounts, update the first-choice designation before the deadline, and coordinate it with the actual enrolment decision.

Five principles:

• The October PSAT/NMSQT is a single opportunity. There is no retake for National Merit.
• Your state’s cutoff is the target, not the national picture.
• Summer before junior year is the highest-return prep window for this specific test.
• Semifinalist qualifies you; the Finalist application is what pays.
• Where a Finalist enrols determines most of the money.

THE INFORMATION GAP, NOT THE ABILITY GAP

The National Merit pipeline is not a lottery. Preparation produces qualification, qualification produces eligibility, and the designation decision produces the money.

Families who do well here do not wait to see how October goes. They prepare over the summer, know their state’s number, treat the test as the event it is, and complete the application when it arrives.

What usually stands between a family and this money is not their student’s ability. It is knowing the money exists.
