AP Exams 2020 Format: Length and Structure

Here are the important points that you should know right now.

  • Exams will only cover topics and skills that AP classes have theoretically already gone over by early March. No content after that point will be tested.
  • This year’s exams will be open book/open notes.
  • Most exams will include one to two free-response questions.
    • Each question will be separately timed.
    • Students will write and submit their responses within that timeframe alone.
  • Exams will be 45 minutes long and include an additional 5 minute period for uploading.
    • To start the exam on time, students must access the online testing system 30 minutes ahead of schedule to set up.
  • Students are allowed to take exams on an internet-connected device including computers, tablets, and smartphones. Using one of these devices, they will be able to type and upload question responses.
    • In addition, students can handwrite their responses and submit a photo of them too. Either option is allowed.
  • AP world language and culture exams will contain two spoken tasks similar to two free-response questions on the current exam. Written responses will not be required for those specific questions.
