I launched a test prep business with $900 during my senior year of college that has now generated millions in revenue. However, it was not easy. Most entrepreneurs have the luxury of dedicating all of their time to the business. Unfortunately, student entrepreneurs have to balance class with business. Here are a few tips that will help you be more effective at launching a business while in school.

(1) Schedule Classes Twice a Week

In order to balance my time between school and business, I was strategic about class schedules. I scheduled all of my classes on Tuesday and Thursday. This meant that I had 5 days a week that I could focus strictly on my business. Of course, not every student will have this luxury. But try to reduce your classes to as few days as possible.

(2) Set Daily Milestones

A large task becomes much easier if you chip away at it every day. For example, to launch my SAT prep business, I needed a curriculum. Writing a book while in school sounds like a daunting undertaking. However, I made a daily milestone: write 10 pages of curriculum a day.

This simple milestone helped me write hundreds of pages in just a few short weeks. If you do not have a daily task that helps you get one step closer to launching your business, your progress will become stagnant because of the all-too-common excuse of “I got busy with school.”

(3) Take 1 Weekend Night Off

You might think that this tip means to take 1 weekend night off in order to relax. But it’s actually the opposite. You should spend Friday or Saturday of every weekend to focus on working on your business. Use the other night to go out with friends or do whatever you enjoy.

The reality of a student entrepreneur is that your weekends and nights are no longer for relaxing, but for your working on your business. If you are truly passionate about your business, you won’t mind. When I was launching my business, I did not care to do anything else.
